Print Quality:
- Cheap paper - good
- Quality paper - very good (nothing beats my old HP1 but it cost $3000)
- Envelopes: worked flawlessly
Cost: If you don't need to duplex, you can find cheaper models that may suit you. Otherwise it's low priced. Came with startup cartridge good for 250 pages. Cost of replacement cartridge: High yield, 2,600 pages, $54 at Amazon. $40 elsewhere.
Portability: The weight is no problem but it's too bulky to be considered portable. It's substantially bigger than my photo printer but smaller and lighter than any of my other laser printers.
Out-of-Toner Problem - this printer, like the HL-2140, will indicate that it's out of toner after a designated number of pages have printed, even though it may still have hundreds of pages of reasonable print quality remaining. To overcome this limitation and get it to keep printing, tape over the sensors (do Youtube.com search for Brother HL-2140 Toner for instructions).

Printers are following the "razor and blades" business model. They are sold at a very low price. Manufacturers then make up the profit by selling cartridges at a ridiculously high price. In this case, the cartridge is half the price of the printer. All Brother monochrome printers look extremely similar. The flagship model is HL2270DW now Brother Printer HL2270DW Wireless Monochrome Printer. I suggest that you buy that printer instead. That printer is constantly on sale. It is around one hundred dollars and carried by Amazon if it is on sale. It is significantly cheaper and has more features with the same printing performance. Here is the comparison.
Duplex: Both support it.
Cartridge: Both use TN450
Performance: HL2240D: 24ppm, HL2270DW: 27ppm
Network support: HL2240D: None, HL2270DW: wired and wireless
Price as of 12/22/2010: HL2240D: one hundred and thirty, HL2270DW: less than one hundred
Nowadays I will not buy a printer without network support. From the above comparison, I really do not see a reason to buy this printer.
Update on 4/24/2011: Amazon no longer carries HL2270DW. It is now only carried by third party vendors, and it is over one hundred dollars. On the other hand, this printer costs only eighty bucks. You may want to rethink it if you don't need network feature. Or you can always wait to see if the price of HL2270DW will drop.
